Before the television set was invented and the term, "TV dinner", was coined, families enjoyed spending time together in other ways. Whether it was going out to sporting events, taking a stroll in the park around their Scarborough real estate properties or listening to the radio. Yes, the radio. Don't laugh. The AM/FM radio used to be the most popular household item going. Families would get together and listen to music, hear about the latest news or follow along to weekly plays.
There was a lot that the radio did back in the day. They were, well, still are, television sets without a screen and moving pictures. Every London Ontario real estate property on the block owned a radio. If they didn't then they'd be laughed at by their neighbours. Just think about what it would be like walking into your friend's, neighbour's, or family member's house or 20 Avoca Avenue condo in Toronto and they didn't own at least one television set. You'd think they were weird or something. That's what it used to be like. Only substitute television sets with radios.
The days of sitting around the living room, huddled up next to the radio, listening to the latest musical hit or hearing the news being broadcast, are long gone. Today, technology has advanced the way people listen to music at home. Or the way they ingest the news. Walk into any teenager's room in Brampton condominiums and they will have an MP3 player and a computer equipped with iTunes. Downloading music is the most popular way of consuming music today. You can download as many songs or albums as you want, and depending on the capacity of your MP3 player, it can hold hundreds or even thousands of songs. You don't have to be stuck sitting by the radio to listen to music or hear the news.
You can roam freely around your condos in downtown Toronto with a pair of headphones on. Or you can stream music from your computer or MP3 player in one room wirelessly to another room in your house. Technology has come a long way since the advent of the AM/FM radio. You can listen to whatever you want to hear, whenever you want to hear it, in whatever way you want to hear it. The way news or music at home was heard in the past has changed and it will only continue to change in the days and years ahead.
