After upwards of forty years selling outdoor wicker furniture in Toronto, most people look forward to their retirement with great anticipation. They dream of doing all the things they never had time for while they were working. When retirement finally comes, however, many people are at a loss as to what to do, either because they don't know where to start or their dreams were never very realistic. Either way, here are some ideas on how to fill your retirement.

Travel

Traveling is the most popular way for seniors to enjoy themselves during their retirement years. They buy themselves some real estate in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and spend their winters sitting on the beach, take cruises or bus tours to see the world, or make the rounds visiting family members they haven't seen for years. Getting started with travel plans is easy - just go visit a travel agent, either in person or online, who will guide you through the process.

Take up a Hobby

Now that they have a lot more free time, many retired seniors choose to fill their time with the hobbies they couldn't squeeze in while they were working. Some build model railroads. Others play in a band. Still more start going to yoga in Mississauga. If you don't have an existing hobby, just pick up the flyer for your local rec center and browse the listings until something catches your eye. Try out different classes to expand your horizons.

Volunteer

Work provides people with a venue in which to feel like they are accomplishing something, so after retirement many people are unable to sit around their Etobicoke condos doing nothing. Instead, they volunteer their services with a charity or community group such as the Canadian Cancer Society or the Boys and Girls Club, who can always use both skilled and unskilled help. If you're new to volunteering, use a matching service online to find the right group.

Go Back to School

Some people laugh at the idea of older people going back to university after retirement, but they shouldn't. Retirement is a great time to study simply for the sake of learning. If there's a university or college near your Davisville Village neighborhood, pick up a calendar and check out what courses interest you. If there's no school convenient, you can study online or through correspondence through a variety of different universities' outreach programs.
