After a hard day of selling Punta Mita vacation rentals to pensioners looking to escape for the winter, most of us are ready for a little escape ourselves. Some of us like to escape to the mall for a little retail therapy while others prefer to curl up with a good book in front of the fire. But most people, when asked what they like to do after a hard day at work, will tell you that more than anything they want to go out and have a drink. If you're living and working in Halifax, or if you're visiting the Halifax area, one of the places you should try when you go for your drink is the Seahorse Tavern. The Seahorse Tavern is one of our favorite places to drink in Halifax. You can go to one of those shiny, upscale bars if you want to see and be seen and pay too much for your drinks, or if you want a cool place where you can hang out and chat with your friends, you can go to the Seahorse. It was actually the first place in Halifax with a beer license, way back when there was an old lady was living in a big house with a yard where Bay Bloor Condos would eventually be in Toronto.

The atmosphere in the Seahorse is one of a kind. Instead of going the upscale waiting room decor route and living up to the name by scattering fish and their aquarium heaters all over the place, they've gone the old fashioned sailor's dive route. The lighting is dim, the wood is old and elbow-polished, the tables are private, and there are huge brass seahorse statues mounted on the bar, glaring out with their glowing red eyes. It's actually got quite a pirate feel to it, but not a Disneyland "Pirates of the Caribbean" type look, that's for sure. Strictly grown-ups only.

The Seahorse bills itself as a venue for live entertainment, so if you go after 9pm, especially on weekends, you'll have a chance to listen to some up and coming Halifax bands. The music might be rock n' roll, R&B, funk, metal, or some mix of genres. Cover charge for these events is usually between $10 and free, so even those of you without high paying real estate jobs can afford it. Of course, if loud music isn't your thing, you can always go on an off day or in the off hours to take in the atmosphere and hang out with your friends.

The Seahorse also has a back room that they rent out for parties and events, so if you want to do something new and different with your employees from Landscaping Hamilton when you come to Halifax for the conference, you can book into the Seahorse.
